I sprint to him, throwing myself into his arms and kissing him harder than ever.

“It’s perfect, and I love it, Jaxon. But I love you more.”

“I love you, Aγαπημένη. Welcome home.”

Chapter 22

JAXON

It’s well past midnight as I lie awake, staring at the ceiling. Natalie sleeps peacefully next to me, her hand draped gingerly across my chest. But peace is not something I feel tonight.

There’s a rat on my Alpha Squad.

Someone that would go to the extreme lengths of trying to poison me with a bottle of scotch.

And as I lay here, next to Natalie, who moved here for me and placed her trust in me to protect her, it’s all I can think about.

When she finally stirs, rolling onto her side in the other direction, I decide this is my opportunity to get out of bed. I quietly throw on a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt and grab my last pack of cigarettes from the drawer.

Within minutes I find myself walking downstairs and knocking on the door of Ethan’s bedroom.

“I’m sleeping,” he calls.

I roll my eyes, opening the door anyway. I see Ethan reach for his gun instinctively before realizing it’s just me.

“Jesus, Jaxon!” he sighs, putting it away.

“You know,” I say, stepping into the room and closing the door behind me. “No one who is sleeping yells, ‘I’m sleeping.’”

“How would you know?” he asks sarcastically, looking at me over the rim of his reading glasses. “Seems like you hardly ever sleep anymore, yourself.”

I shake my head with a sigh, turning one of the lounge chairs around to face him.

“I don’t. And tonight I have too much on my mind.”

He nods, setting his book down with a sigh.

“I was kind of wondering when I would see you in here.”

“We have a problem,” I say, as I lean forward on my knees.

“We have lots of those it seems,” Ethan agrees.

“Fighting with Black and Michael,” I say, shaking my head. “That I understand. Even Rachel I understand.”

I stare down at my hands.

“But a traitor on Alpha,” I say, looking up at him. “Another traitor on Alpha. That I don’t understand.”

“What don’t you understand?”

“I’ve done everything I could for these men. I’ve bled for them, and they’ve all bled for me. What could I have done to make one of them want to betray me like this, and hurt my family, again?”

Ethan sighs, staring at me.

“I mean fuck, at least with Samuel that was drug related. There was a reason. An outside component that corrupted his mind and took over his rationality and his life.”

I run my hand through my hair and sit back in the chair.

“It’s the same thing here,” Ethan says, quietly.

“It can’t be, Ethan,” I shake my head. “We’d know if it was drugs, they’re all regularly tested now.”

“I didn’t mean drugs specifically,” Ethan says. “I meant it’s still some ‘outside component.’ You have to figure out what it is.”

“How the hell do I do that? Especially now that I don’t trust half of the squad that is in charge of my safety.
